Fowzie 410pxSenior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie has explained why no Muslim candidates have been fielded by the UPFA for the Uva provincial council elections.

The minister was speaking at a media briefing at the SLFP headquarters in Colombo yesterday (Sep. 15).

“We did not nominate a Muslim candidate in keeping with the brotherhood, comradeship and fellowship between both ethnic groups. Muslims will support the government at this election,” he said.

Noting that the present government ministers have a very good understanding of the aspirations of the Muslims, Minister Fowzie has added, "They work for and represent the Muslims. Therefore, there was no need for a Muslim member to represent the Muslims. Muslims will vote to usher in the victory of the government. We do not want to destroy the brotherhood between Sinhalese and Muslims.”

Adding that Muslims have a very firm faith on the President, the minister said that certain persons are attempting to tarnish this faith.

Although the opposition attempts to break the support of the Muslim masses, the public does not accept it, he said, adding that "the Muslim masses will always be with the President."
