Mahinda despriya 410pxThe election commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has warned the government that providing aid in the form of food rations, money as well as Sil garments within the Uva province in the backdrop of the upcoming elections, is a violation of election regulations.

In a formal correspondence, Mahinda Deshapriya has severely warned UPFA Secretary Susil Premajayantha, SLFP general secretary Maithripala Sirisena and SLFP treasurer Dulles Alahapperuma that should anyone seek legal redress after the election, such items would be presented before court as evidence and that at such an instance, any victorious candidates could even lose their Provincial Council seat.

The warning comes after the Supreme Court ruling on Sep. 11 overruled a previous directive of the election commissioner, which ordered to stop distributing Rs. 2,500 as drought relief in the Moneragala district.

Deshapriya has added that distribution of items including dry food rations and money as well distribution of Sil garments in Buddhist temples throughout the district on Poya day is a violation of election regulations occurring on a state level and is also a misuse of state assets.
