JayampathyW 410px 14 09 12Many people would need to make sacrifices to abolish executive presidency with some political parties even might being compelled to change their identity, constitutional expert Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne says.

He was speaking at seminar held at the Foundation institute in Colombo yesterday (Sep. 11) which was organised by the People's Movement for Democracy.

"In the past, there were people who mentioned that they couldn't contest from anything but the 'hand' symbol. Similarly, there are people who say the same with the 'elephant' symbol. Around 1993, a group within the SLFP itself changed this and decided to go ahead with anything, leg or hand...This is how a change came to be in 1994. Therefore, I urged not to keep crying over the past but to look towards the future. This is a hard task but we will be able to find a way. If we fail this time, the future generations will curse us," he said.

Speaking at the event, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the UPFA's 2/3 majority in Parliament was not a mandate but a 'mutation'.
