Wite flg 410pxDeshamanya Ranjith Abeysuriya PC, a well known lawyer and former Chairman of the National Police Commission has passed away.

He is survived by his wife Indrani and three children.

The final rites will be held at the Borella Cemetary today (May 24) at 5.00pm.

A one time Director Public Prosecution of the Attorney General's Department he was a former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and also served as a member of the Law Commission of Sri Lanka.

A product of Mahinda College, Galle and Royal College, Colombo he studied law at the Law Department of the University of Ceylon with the late Lakshman Kadirgamar. Once out from the Colombo Law College, he practised as an advocate in Galle from 1955.

Subsequently he joined the Attorney General's Department as a Crown Counsel and obtained his Master's Degree in Public Law in 1968 from the Stanford University.

He assumed the office of the Director Public Prosecution in 1975 at the Attorney Generals Department. He later left the department and joined the unofficial Bar and practised until he was appointed President's Counsel in 1988.

In 1991, he was elected President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka followed by the post of President of SAARC Law and in 1998 he was made a member of the Law Commission and was honoured with the Deshamanya title by the government.

In 2002 he was appointed Chairman of the National Police Commission. He also served as a Board Member of the Duncan White Sports Federation.
