WoesWeliweriyawater 630ච 13 08 05This is still the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The Constitution and the law of the land still guarantees the right of its Citizens to singularly and collectively express their opinion, support and register protests publicly and peacefully. Let's therefore agree, the government has no right to use brute, armed force against unarmed civilians asking for clean water. Lets also agree, the government was and is duty bound to have the complaints on water pollution, made by the people of Rathupaswela, Nedungamuwa, Weliweriya and adjoining villages counting over 10 in all on the broader plains South West of Attanagalu Oya, independently and professionally investigated. Lets agree that the people have a right to demand that the government investigate into their complaints through independent and professional personnel and institutes, without fail and without delay too. Therefore lets agree once again, using brute armed force on such people was a gross violation of their rights and that the government has no right to mobilise the military against those people.

Military 630px 13 07 15The recent death of a school principal whilst receiving a training offered by the Cadet Corps to decorate him as a Brevet Captain has sparked off another round of discussion on demilitarising post-conflict Sri Lanka, because the civil war that lasted for more than three decades had militarised Sri Lankan society structurally as well as culturally, providing a quasi-legitimacy for further militarisation.
