ATM 410px 14 09 10It’s now possible to use the Emirates Identity Card for cash withdrawals and transfers through automated teller machines (ATM) in United Arab Emirates as Al Hilal Bank became the first bank to introduce the facility.

Al Hilal Bank introduced the facility under the unique ‘Your Emirates ID...Your New Debit Card’ scheme.

There are more than 4,600 ATM machines in the country belonging to local and international banks, according to UAE Central Bank data.

The latest available data till December 2013 revealed that different banks have issued nearly 11 million cards in the country. There were around 39 million transactions through ATMs in the country in the last quarter of 2013, involving Dh245.3 million amounts, according to the data.

Earlier this month, the Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) conducted an opinion poll on its website with the participation of 9,319 followers, 76.61 per cent of whom supported the use of the ID card for e-payments and cash withdrawals.
